There are several different illustrations of him and not one of them has been heralded as the canon illustration. His appearance has never been described in any of the Harry Potter novels, not even on a Chocolate Frog card.
Newt Scamander is a clean slate. They could cast anyone for him. They don’t have to cast a white person. It’s not racebending if they cast a POC. It’s not whitewashing if they don’t, but this is JK Rowling’s chance to create a POC character who is substantially fleshed out. Because honestly? Her efforts in the Harry Potter series fell flat.
And let’s face it, the most “magical” time in 1920s New York is the Harlem Renaissance. Sure, we have the flappers and the Prohibition and the Jazz Age, but let’s not forget how the black Americans took back Harlem and launched a cultural movement that made that neighbourhood the “Black Mecca”. Who isn’t convinced that Langston Hughes and co. weren’t all wizards?
You're a little harsh calling Oliver Wood's unintended men comment 'sexist and misogynistic' don't you think?
I’m going to come out of hiatus briefly for a moment to answer this Ask, but no, I don’t think I’m being harsh at all. Addressing a mixed-gender group as ‘men’ isn’t an extremely terrible form of sexism and misogyny, obviously, but it’s still a subtle and casual form of it — that we assume male is the important gender to the point that it’s the default no matter what gender everyone else in a mixed-gender group is. There’s a reason mixed-gender groups get referred to as ‘men’ or ‘guys’ while never being addressed with female words, should gender-neutral ones not be used. The fact that it’s unintended is still a problem, because it means it’s a subconscious and internalised one people don’t even notice.
And I’m also going to be very honest here and say that I’m also disappointed that a post that was originally about appreciation for an under-appreciated Black female character (Angelina Johnson) got turned into a post about appreciating a popular white male character, puns, and now apparently how it’s too harsh on a male character who said something casually sexist, however unintended it was. At the same time, I’m also unsurprised.
Hey there! This is just a brief announcement to note that POTTER COLOURS will be on an indefinite hiatus from now until, well, we’re not quite sure, but it’ll probably be some time in August. This is in order for us to concentrate on some other projects both online and offline, as well as to allow for more relevant material for this blog to accumulate on tumblr — we’re not surprised that Harry Potter fandom in general has slowed down during the last few years, so we’re going to give it (and us) some time to re-energise.
(this is a full text version of this post as requested, to enable everyone to read it. if you’ve read and reblogged that one, you dont need to read this!)
CALLING ALL CRITICAL QUEER CREATIVE HARRY POTTER FANS!
THE QUEERBLER NEEDS YOU.
YES THATS RIGHT, THE QUEERBLER.
before u say “what is the queerbler???” let me explain you a thing:
THE QUEERBLER IS A FANZINE! IT IS FOREMOST A PLATFORM FOR QUEER HARRY POTTER FANS TO RECLAIM AND CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE THEMES AND NARRATIVES PRESENTED IN THE HARRY POTTER BOOKS.
"But i am not queer!"
Ok? You are welcome to contribute. There will not be an Inqueersitorial Squad. We want to adress other things in addition to queerness, and we welcome you to contribute those. What we do not need is more Straight Opinions, as the canon is already full of those.
THEMES WE ARE INTERESTED IN:
queerness, including but not limited to: gender identity and sexuality (including asexuality!), and its lack of representation in the canon
other, less serious stuff, like word building meta (such as wizarding higher education, fashion, history (other than the 400 goblin rebellions mentioned in canon), textbooks, etcetera.
WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU:
ART (shipping art is a-ok. we like queer ships heck yes we do.)
FANFIC (same here, send us what you got.)
META (discuss queerness in canon. fashion! history! wand lore??…send us potions recipes. whatever!!)
CRITIQUE (do you think something in the series sucks??so do we. let us discuss.) (feel free to lambaste the movies too!)
WE WILL BE CHOOSY ABOUT WHAT GOES IN THE ZINE because of printing restraints etc, but whatever you think is cool to share, we want to see it!
Hi there! I'm wondering if you know of any resources for fanart of hermione being depicted as a person of colour?
In terms of fanart where Hermione is interpreted as a WOC, we have a poc interpretations tag for fanart of characters who do not have their race mentioned explicitly in the books, but can be read as POC without contradicting anything (hence why we don’t call it ‘racebending’ in those cases).
Also, elvendork and becomedog on tumblr regularly draw Hermione as a Black woman — we haven’t re-blogged all of their work yet in order to pace ourselves, but you should definitely check out their blogs if you want to see more in the meantime!
If any of our other readers know of any other artists on tumblr or elsewhere who draw Hermione as a WOC, please send us an Ask and we’ll pass it on!
